Just at the right moment, Lien and Bennie's cousin entered the compartment where they are sitting. This was Louis Brandon. He had a Jewish Council band on his arm and said he had come to the train to get Lien and Bennie out. The management of the orphanage allowed them to come along. They walked from wagon to wagon until the end of the train. There they got out and walked off the grounds without looking up, accompanied by their cousin, supposedly to say goodbye to someone quickly. Without this cousin it probably would have turned out very differently.

Lien and Bennie were initially placed with relatives in Amsterdam. From there, Lien went to a hiding place in Maastricht a few days later. Benny didn't go yet. He had suddenly contracted appendicitis and was admitted to the Jewish hospital (Nieuwe Keizersgracht 104, Amsterdam). He also went to Limburg 2 weeks later.
